CMS is providing all beneficiaries affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, as well as Tropical Storm Nate, a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This SEP will give these clients an additional chance to change their MA/PD or PDP plan in the event that they were unable to make an election during another qualifying period.
This includes the opportunity to enroll, disenroll, or make a plan change. This SEP is effective from the start of the incident period and runs until December 31, 2017.
CMS prohibits any marketing or advertising of the SEP in an effort to capitalize on it. When talking to your clients, agents can help impacted beneficiaries by sharing information about the availability of the SEP and asking that the clients let others know as well.
For a client to be considered eligible for this SEP they must reside, or have resided at the start of the incident period, in an area for which the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has declared an emergency or major disaster. Additionally, clients who don't live in the affected areas but rely on help making healthcare decisions from friends or family members who live in the affected areas are eligible.
